In the wake of the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary, about half of the personnel of the Hungarian Forestry School in Sopron, both students and faculty, left the country and went into exile in Austria. They were aided and guided by the school's dean, Dr. Roller Kalman. He was able to solicit an offer of a temporary five-year "adoption" by the University of British Columbia, who promised to maintain the school until the current group of students graduated. At the beginning of 1957 14 faculty members and 200 students left for Canada and established the Sopron Division of the Faculty of Forestry at UBC and by September 1961 the last class of students had completed their graduation.
