The novel is set in the years just before World War II and is itself a portrait of a midwestern town called Gateshead and within it the Roland family. Ava Ruth Hochstatter (1918-2002) was born in Hutchinson County, South Dakota and grew up in Yankton. For several years she traveled with her husband, a Congregational minister, from parish to parish before settling in San Carlos, California, in the 1940's.
