A story of rural New England and four generations of a family that declined to move out West, but rather remained through the age of industrialization on the family's rye farm in the town of Jaalam. (Jaalam, a fictional place, was inspired by Chase's hometown of Holliston, Massachusetts; the name Jaalam itself may have been drawn from the work of a fellow Massachusetts author, James Russell Lowell, and his book The Biglow Papers.) Hardy Rye was Daniel Chase's third novel.
