The frontispiece is a portrait of Caroline "Carrie" Scott Harrison, the First Lady and wife of President Benjamin Harrison, who passed away in October 1892. The first chapter is preceded by an illustration of Frances Cleveland, and there is a plate later in the book showing portraits of the First Ladies Johnson, Grant, Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, and Cleveland.
Fanny Lemira Gillette (1828-1926) was the author of the White House Cook Book, first published in 1887. Her husband, George Gillette, invented the Gillette Clipping Machine (for horse grooming) and her son, King Camp Gillette, founded the Gillette razor company.
Later editions of the White House Cook Book were co-credited to the Hugo Ziemann, who served under President Harrison as the Steward of the White House between February and October 1889.
