Title: 1814 Court Martial of Tennessee Militiamen
Author: James L. Douthat (editor)
Description: Card covers. Clean and unmarked. Index. 181 pp. [misprinted as 281].10.8 x 8.4 inches.
Includes an index with more than 7,000 entries (probably about 1,800 unique names). The first part of this volume is a reprint of the 1828 Report to Congress entitled "Report of the Committee on Military Affairs, to which were referred the correspondence and documents from the War Department, in relation to the proceedings of a court martial, ordered for the trail of certain Tennessee Militiamen."
The report reflects the attitudes and practices of militia lie during the War of 1812. The legal issue behind these court martials stemmed from a misunderstanding between the militia men and the Federal Government regarding the length of their tour of duty: the militia men understood it to be three months and the Federal Government understood it to be six months.
The second part consists of 97 pages of militia rosters/muster rolls, listing men from West (Middle) Tennessee. Many of these men never applied for pensions and, therefore, are not found on the bulk of the listings for veterans of the War of 1812.
