Cuban history as a verse novel, told though the story of Rosa La Bayamesa (Rosa Maria Castellanos, 1834-1907), a traditional Latin American herbal-medicine healer, nurse, and organizer of field hospitals. Primarily set during the three wars of independence fought by the Cubans against Spain in the later part of the nineteenth century: the Ten Years' War, the Little War, and the War of Independence.
Margarita Engle (b. 1951) is a Cuban-American poet, novelist, and journalist. The Surrender Tree was awarded a Newbery Honor in 2009, with Engle being the first Latino to receive the honor. She was selected by the Poetry Foundation to serve as the Young People's Poet Laureate from 2016 to 2019.
