The author, Harriet Stitzel, passed away in January 1878, just prior to finishing her novel. Samuel L. Simpson, "the Burns of Oregon," brought it to it natural conclusion and prepared it for publication. The story is set in the milieu of cultured society and ranges from Quebec and Paris to San Francisco. The volume concludes with a collection of eleven additional pieces by the author, consisting of essays, short stories, and poetry.
